Laser eye surgery, is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses. To be eligible patients must be at least 18 years old, free of any significant eye problems and any conditions that affects healing e.g. lupus, severe diabetes etc.

Patients should be prepared to go without wearing contacts for one week with soft lenses,
4-6 weeks for gas permeable contacts. Consultation with our doctors can determine if you would be a good candidate for the surgery.

Dr. Oladeji provides pre-operative and post-operative care for patients seeking PRK (Photo-refractive Keratectomy) and LASIK (Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomuleusis).
Dr. Oladeji also works with a few select ophthalmologists (Corneal Specialists) who have performed thousands of surgeries and have very high success rates.

Pre Operative Evaluation

Your pre operative evaluation is an important step in the surgery process. The pre operative data gathered at this evaluation includes:

  • a history of your past medical and ocular condition,
  • an assessment of your current visual status,
  • an eye health evaluation, including dilation, will be performed.

The doctor will also discuss with you your expectations and lifestyle needs.

Your pre operative consultation appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled after your pre operative evaluation is complete. During your consultation, the surgeon will review your visual data, verify the health of your eyes, and some more test will be performed.
Questions or concerns you may have about the procedure will be discussed and you will be given instructions needed prior to the procedure.

Surgical Procedures

The two predominant corrective laser procedures are: laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Both procedures are used in the correction of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

LASIK eye surgery begins with the creation of a corneal flap. Doctors have traditionally used a hand-held device with an oscillating metal blade, called a microkeratome to create the corneal flap. Results were considered good. The advent of a new technology, the IntraLase (a computer guided laser energy), replaces the use of the microkeratome. With the precision of the laser, you can now have greater assurance of a safer procedure and an excellent result.
After the flap is created, it is folded back, and an excimer laser is used to remove (or “ablate”) some tissue from the newly exposed surface. The flap is put back in place, resulting in a reshaped cornea that produces better vision.
In the IntraLase procedure, two different lasers are used, hence the term “bladeless” or “all-laser” LASIK.

With PRK, the corneal epithelium is first anaesthetized (freezed) and scraped away. An excimer laser, which uses a cool ultraviolet light beam, is then used to precisely remove (“ablate”) very tiny bits of tissue from the surface of the cornea in order to reshape it. A bandage contact lens is then placed on the treated cornea for 3 to 5 days to allow the epithelium to re-grow. The reshaped cornea, works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clearer vision than before.

Post Operative Visit

Your first post operative visit will be scheduled for one day after surgery. To insure the best possible results, additional post operative visits will be scheduled over the year.
